Alsace Settlement in U.S.
For those interested, I live in the only Alsatian Settlement in the United States. It is Castroville, Texas. We have over 100 home on the National Historic Register. They are Alsatian style homes built by settlers during the years 1844-1880's.Henri Castro led the largest immigration in Texas, second only to Stephen F. Austin. The Alsatian language is still spoken here today. In 1976, 30 decendants travelled back to Alsace and stayed with their distant cousins.A relationship was forged and is still quite active today. In fact, as I type this, there is a large group of Alsatians stay in our city tonight. We have a sister city. They moved a home here in 1998 that was originally built in 1648 in Alsace.Through the last several years they have returned to finish the home out.It is quite beautiful. On April 8, 2002, there will be a large contingent comming for the grand opening of the home. Our local library has many books on the history of Alsace and the life of the families that originally came here.We have a group of dancers that perform wearing the traditional dress of Alsace. If you can't make it to Alsace, this may be the next best thing.Castroville is just outside of San Antonio.
