Mahncke
Needing assistance locating one elusive Heinrich Mahncke from Altona, Germany. He was from the Altona (near the city of Hanover)in the late 1800's. He married Maria Hachel(she was from denmark). I do not have any of their childrens names, but I am assisting his grand daughter in locating him (she's now 83). He owned a clipper ship names "Ceres" and transported emigrants from the Port of Hamburg to Corral Harbor (Valdivia, Chile) from 1880-1890. One of his friends assisted him in transporting these emigrants, and wrecked the ship. The loss ruined Heinrich emotionally, and he was instutionalized in Germany, and never heard from again. Now, the question is, where would I start to find out anything about this ship or the mental institution? My details are limited as my friend still lives in Chile, and we communicate through a third party (she is the grand mother of my best friend, she speaks only german and spanish, i speak neither!) She said that she returned to Germany in the 1970's, and visited a library where she found a book called "The History of Clipper Ships" written and published in german that contained information on Mr. Mahncke and his life. Where could I start looking for this book? Lastly, can someone please clarify what region I am looking for? I am getting a little confused at all of the "kingdoms." I think I should be looking in the lower saxony region, or niedersachen area when looking on german gelealogy sites if someone could correct or clarify this for me. Thank you in advance!!
