Did Germans need permission to leave Bavaria?
Request for information,
I have been trying to locate where my ggreat grandfather Peter Lesner came from in Bavaria. All I have been able to find out is that he came to America in 1868 and was naturalized and he lived in NYC until his death. This data came from the 1900 census and his death certificate.I have looked at children's birth and death certs and they only list that he came from Germany.
I have looked at naturalization indexes and could not find one entry.I even submitted a search request to the National archives to perform a search on Peter Lesner. They came back with 1 match on the name except with a different variant spelling of the last name. When I obtained a copy of the record, his declaration of intention showed he applied in 1860 which is before the 1868 date on the census.
When Germans came to America is 1868, did they have to fill out any official paperwork to allow them to leave Germany and come to America?Could this be a source that I could consult to hopefully locate where my grandfather came from? What type of record would it have been, and where might I find it?
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim
