I think the parents of Marie Von Essen could be Wilhelm Von Essen and Marianne Garny.

There is a book that has a pedigree chart for the Von Essens. Alexander Von Essen (1908-1989) who wrote the book, has passed away, but he does have a son Heribert Von Essen in Coblenz.

"Beitrag zur Geschichte des Familienclans Cosman und des hauses Cosmans von Essen" by Alexander von Essen

According to WorldCat, the only copy of this book is at the Harvard College Library. I live in Chicago and might go to Harvard to see it. The book is kept off site, so the reference desk can not pull it and copy the pedigree chart.

I wonder if she could be the Anna Von Essen, aged 4, who arrived in Baltimore in 1841 on the Ship Marianne with her mother Marianna Von Essen and two sisters, Matilda and Fransica Von Essen. The father was Wilhelm Von Essen, an orchestra conductor, in Crefeld, Germany. Anna had another sister Maria Von Essen who married a Carl Wm. Reinhart (my family line) and Matilda married his brother Carl Ferdinand Reinhart.

Matilda Von Essen has the same parents as Monsignor Anton Ludwig Von Essen of Neuwerk, Germany who are Wilhelm Von Essen and Mariane Garny.

There is another book that states the Patriarch of this family was a Philipus Cosman/Kosman who converted to Catholism and changed his name to Christian Von Essen. One of his descendants was this Ludwig Von Essen. Two other descendants became priests.

My sister-in-law translated part of it:

Their grandfather, Philipp Kosman was Jewish and converted to Christianity and took the name Christian von Essen. They emigrated from Germany to the States in 1838, leaving the 8 year-old Ludwig behind with an aunt. The mother Mariana was of Belgian (vallonish) descent!


These two are other descendants of Christian Von Essen.
