OEMCKE/OEMKE/OEHMKE
My name is Maureen Oemcke, and I am searching for my husband's ancestry. We have discovered that his great-great grandfather, Ernst Cart Oemcke, left Wismar some time between 1855 and 18863 apprenticed as ship's cooper and ended up in New Zealand. His naturalisation papers say he was "from" Wismar, but no name "Oemcke" is shown for those years in Wismar.I assume he may have been born elsewhere.
I would suspect that Ernst Carl Oemcke would have been a young lad when apprenticed, possibly born around 1841 (he was married in New Zealand at the age of 28 in 1869) and the places Aschbach, Brandenburg, and Mecklen-Schwerin come up in very vague stories of the name's history.
A telephone directory search has yielded little help as I am unable to speak German. Can somebody please help with locating this person.
