Read about these friendly Hungarians
I was recently on a month long trip around Europe before I begin my senior year of college.I decided to stop and visit the place where my grandmother's grandparents were from.I wanted to just see the town and find out if I had any relation there. When I arrived at the small little town of Gava, near the vineyards of Tokaj, the only buisness open in the town was a small bar.I went inside, speaking no Hungarian, and asked if anyone spoke English.Nobody did, so I wrote down my grandparent's name, Kopeczy and pointed to myself and then to the ground and around the town to ask if there were any there still. After deciding that there were probably none there, one of the old men, they were mostly all old, took me to a house where a woman came out.She appeared to be in her 60-70's.A few moments later, an even older woman came out that appeared to be her mother. They tried to tell me things, but the language barrier was too great.Next, we went across the street, which could almost be called the other side of town, and met with another woman. She took me to another house where they tried to call someone on the telephone.Soon after that we went to our final destination. This was a house where a young man, probably my age or a little younger spoke a little bit of English. We decided that the Kopeczy's and Sziksay's, which are my family, were all gone from that area, and that the last any of them knew, the last relative from that small town had moved away quite some time ago to Pe'cs in Southern Hungary. So, while I didn't directly find that much about my family, I did discover that the people from Gava Hungary, with a population of about 500 contains many many friendly people who are more than willing to try and help out an American tracing his roots. If anyone goes to Hungary, stop in a small town and discover the wonderfully friendly people.Ryan
