I asked Krispin if you have gone AWOL. I have not heard from you in a while. However, my search has become an obsession. I have since discovered that the one Ontong was born in Batavia, which is now Jakarta. So I am reading up on the VOC (Dutch East India Company)to see if there are any records available. There is definitely a link over there. He was Malay, so I do not know how we can make him to be Chinese (teehee); unless I find out exactly what Malay meant in the 1800s. It might have had a different meaning in that it could simply have meant from "Malasia". Today most Muslims at the Cape are called Malay. Now I have the difficulty in finding out what he was (racially) that might help me in my persuit. The book I have been reading about the slaves and how they were treated did not make me feel any better. Cheryl said she was talking to her dad and she'll get back to us as soon as she has some info. Unfortunately my dad passed away four years ago and his mum as well – so for me the oral history is somewhat lost. I have been trying to get my brother, Bryan, in Kimberley (South Africa) to get some information as he lives near to my dad's other brothers. So far I could not get the bug to bite him.
Your weather sounds hectic. I have lived in three parts of our country in my lifetime and have experienced extreme weather in terms of South Africa, which is not as bad as one sees on the news in some other countries. Do you have TucTucs over there? I call them scooter taxis.
I work for the Development Policy Research Unit at the University of Cape Town. They do research in Labour Markets, Poverty and Inequality. Most of our work is used by the government for policymaking decisions. Pres Mbeki often uses our director's research in his speeches. I can therefore say I too work for the president. Now we can brag each other some more. Do you perhaps have non-copyright photograhs of Poverty and labour market images which you can send my way? I am always looking for photos to put on the covers of our publications. I do take my own photos, but one can only take so many images of the same enviroment. Pass this on to Krispin as well. He can practice his digital photography.
