Dorsey and Hobbins connection
I am trying to test out a theory.
These are my paternal grandparents:
James Frances Hobbins
b.1880 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
d. abt. 1942 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Mother & father both born in Ireland.
married to:
Emma James
b. 1881 Pennsylvania
d. 1937 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
mother and father both born in Pennsylvania
On LDS 1880 PA Census:
Head of household: Michael Hobbins, age 26,
occupation: boltmaker, b.Ire
Wife: Julia Hobbins, age 28, b. IRE.
Daughter: Margaret, age 1
Son: James age 1 mo.
On 1910 PA Census Miracode there is the following:
Head of household: James HOBBINS(29)b.PA Parents: IRE.
Wife: Elizabeth (38) b. PA
Brother: John HOBBINS(28)b.PA Parents:IRE
Sister in law: Carrie HOBBINS(29)b.GER Parents:GER
Mother: Julia DORSEY (64)widow; b. IRE Parents: IRE
Stepsister: Anna DORSEY (19) b. PA Parents: IRE
Stepsister: Mame DORSEY (17) b. PA Parents:IRE
I have found a Michael HOBBINS with a Julia Hobbins listed as widow. There is a Civil War Pension Index for him
"invalid" June 6, 1876
widow (Julia): Nov.14,1884
"minor":March13,1895 Victor Levin, Guardian
Don't know if these are application dates or certification dates.
The Phila. 1890 city directory has a Julia DORSEY as widow of Michael HOBBINS.
1930 PA Census, Phila. :
head of houshold:John Mc Phillip(36)b.PA;parents Scotland) wife: Anna(39), PA; parents: IRE
brother-in-law:James HOBBINS,Sr(50); m.; postal clerk;
b. PA; Parents:IRE
sister in law: Mame HOBBINS,single(37)with a last name crossed out that looks like Dorsey, b. PA; parents:IRE
nephew: Paul HOBBINS(14) b.PA; father:PA,mother:IRE).
I'm guessing that these are the same Anna & Mame from 1910 Census. I can not find a Paul Hobbins anywhere other than here. Am wondering who's child Paul is. He was born in abt.1916. Son of Mame or John HOBBINS from 1910? Julia would be 70 in 1916 so it's not her. Was there maybe another HOBBINS sibling?
1920 PA Census, Phila., PA
James F. HOBBINS, age 39, married; postal clerk
Emma HOBBINS, wife, age 39, bakery
Ruth STEADMAN, step-daughter, age 11, MD
Richard STEADMAN, step-son,age 9, PA
There's a wrong first name of George listed for my grandfather.
Children are from Emma JAMES HOBBINS' first prior marriage to Richard STEADMAN.
1930 PA Census, Phila.:
Emma HOBBINS, age 49, b. PA, married, bakery
Ruth HOBBINS, daughter, age 22, artist studio
Richard HOBBINS, son, age 19
James Frances HOBBINS, Jr; son; age 8, PA
This is my father. b. May 21,1921;d. Oct. 1987, PA
I think my grandpop was still married to my grandmother Emma (JAMES)STEADMAN HOBBINS but I know that he did not always live with them. Also she appears w/ wrong surname spelling of Hoppins instead of HOBBINS.
Are Julia HOBBINS and Julia DORSEY on & the same? Is she married to the Civil War Micheal HOBBINS? Is James HOBBINS from this 1910 PA Census my grandfather? The John McPhillip household address is very near where my father grew up in Phila.
Does anyone have any info that correlates with any of these people in their famliy? Thanks for any help.
