McCauley/McAuley immigration to Virginia
As found in the census (two brothers stated this), my ggggrandfather came to Virginia from Northern Ireland.
James B McCauley/McAuley (has been spelled both ways) lived in the Deep Bottom and Richmond VA areas during the Civil War. We have lots of information on him in Virginia, but have NO IDEA where he actually came from... I can't find any records before the Civil War...
Here is what we know:
James B McCauley (family spelling)
Married and had family in Virginia
b abt 1827 'Northern Ireland'
d Dec 12,1878 Richmond Virginia buried Oakwood Cemetery
Family lore says that he was a 7th son, and that his son George (b-1860, my gggrandfather) was his 7th son...
James and at least this son were stone masons in the Richmond area. James was also said to have had may other trades including shoemaker (evidence in his southern claim).
There are other McCauley/McAuleys in the area that are probably related with similar occupations, possibly brothers, but again, can't find them before that time period. There were also some McCauleys in the area around the Revolutionary War and are probably NOT related to him...
Any information about how to find someone in Ireland during the early 1800's would be GREATLY appreciated!!!
Thanks in advance for your help,
