Burials at Dunluce Graveyard, Co. Antrim

From the journal of the Bushmills History and Folk-Lore Society and appended below.

From 'Portcaman' the publication of the Bushmills History and Folklore Group

DUNLUCE GRAVEYARD

J.Fred Rankin

The old church of Dunluce lies about half a mile south of Dunluce Castle; it
is a prominent feature, easily visible from the main road from Bushmills to
Portrush. Although space does not permit a full history in this paper, this
was the site of an earlier church, probably built by the Quillans; the ruins
which remain, are those of a church built
by Catherine, the wife of Randal, the first Earl and second Marquis of
Antrim, between the years 1637 and 1640. Although the castle was besieged
during the rebellion of 1641, the church seems to have escaped and remained
as the place of worship of the parish until the present church in
Bushmills was built in 1821. It was thenunroofed, as was the custom, and
its contents sold by auction. The old church was dedicated to Saint
Cuthbert, although the connection between the founders and the Northumbrian
saint remains obscure.

There is a tradition that many of the Spanish sailors who perished when the
Girona was wrecked at the Causeway in 1588, lie buried in the open part of
the graveyard to the south of the church. The graveyard is rarely used today
but is a rich quarry for genealogists researching families from the parish.
The recorded burials are chiefly from the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries, but there are a small number from the seventeenth and a few from
the twentieth century. Many of the families are still represented in the
parish and of great interest is the variety of spellings which can be found
on the memorials; they come from an age before spelling became standardised
in the form we know to-day. Of equal interest is the spelling of the
townland names, giving a clue to the pronunciation of the place-name at the
time.

The north-western corner of the graveyard seems to have been reserved for
families of the Roman Catholic faith; here we find Mcllhargy (mentioned in O
'Laverty's Down and Connor), Sheills and Hamill, although I would not be
certain if this latter family were Catholic, as they are also represented
inside the church.

References to other families can be found in J.B.Hamilton's Records of the
Court Leet for the Manor of Dunluce (Ballymoney, 1934) and in T.H.Mullin's
Families of Ballyrashane (Belfast, 1969). The author recorded these
inscriptions in 1984/5 and a recent inspection showed that some stones,
which were barely legible then, have deteriorated even further. All the
spellings are as recorded and the sign / marks the end of a line, where a
word has been split between two lines. In a future paper, it would be of
interest to analyse the townlands represented; they range far beyond Dunluce
parish, to Ballyrashane and Macosquin parishes, even to Clady townland,
which is, I believe, in the parish of Tickmacrevan.

information.

TODD
James Todd of Ballyhunsley died 31st August 1887 aged 65 years.
Wife, Sarah Ann died 15th June 1906 aged 75 years.
Daughter, Sarah, aged 2 and infant son.
Son, Samuel Todd, 11th December 1930, aged 68 years.
Daughter, Eliza, 28th May 1942, aged 74 years.
Daughter, Lena, 9th May 1944, aged 69 years.

Additional FYI: James Todd and his wife, Sarah Ann Deane were married 19th
May 1854 in Ballyrashane Meeting House. The baptismal records for the
Dunluce Presbyterian Church in Bushmills show that James and Sarah Ann had a
daughter, Sarah, born 3rd September 1868. Then there was another daughter,
Sarah Selina, born on 9th September 1871. This second Sarah Selina would
appear to be the "Lena" who is listed in the census returns of 1901 and 1911
and also on the headstone. Samuel, Eliza and Lena never married but lived
together on the farm at Ballyhunsley until their deaths.
