I search the IFHF's online database at ROOTSIRELAND.IE. It has abt 20 M church/civil/census/etc B/M/D records for MOST Irish counties. Records before 1863 become sparse - almost non-existant before 1800. Protestant records were the least likely to survive.
For John Hernon B 1884 +/- 5 yrs, Co Offaly, with the father's name unknown, I found 2 records: 1883. One of these MAY (no guarantees) be for your ancestor. A view of the detailed records SHOULD show more info.
As an alternative, contact the General Register Office at GROIRELAND.IE. It has all the surviving civil B/M/D for the Republic of Ireland. Civil registration began in 1863 and (in theory) was mandatory.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
