Hello, John,
Although the surname "Purves" isn't one that I'm aware of in Latvia, I have heard of "Purvins'," a diminutive form. But I'm particularly intrigued by your statement: "I understand there was a mass migration from the Baltics to Scotland several centuries ago."
John, what specifically have you heard?Although, I'm aware that an array of artisans from western Europe were invited to the Courland region of what is now the country of Latvia by its ruler Duke James (originally from the English aristocracy) during the 17th century, this is the first I've heard of Baltic people migrating to Scotland.Do you have any details that you could share with us?Sometimes even 'urban legends' have a foothold in reality.
Thanks!
Elizabeth
