Mercy,

I don’t know how to go about finding casualty records for losses in the Mexican Revolution.I’m sure there is someone out there who does know how.It has been some time since I visited the UCLA Research Library, but I know they have extensive resources for each of the Mexican States. In the post-Mexican Revolution era, scores of soldiers (or relatives of these soldiers) published their memoirs. In addition, various local historians have published historical accounts of the Mexican Revolution in their home states. For example, I just ran a search on the UCLA online directory for “Chihuahua and Revolution” and came up with the 10 publications listed below. You can access the UCLA online directory at:

My sense is that you will have more success trying to find information on your Aunt Maria than on your uncle Rafael. The assassination of a General by a vengeful woman is the kind of story that would have made the “headlines” at that time. It’s the kind of event that would have been reported in the newspapers, in history books and personal memoirs. There may even have been a “Corrido” about your Aunt Maria commemorating her act of justice.

Also, the death of a General would not have gone unnoticed by the Civil and Religious authorities (whereas the death of a young soldier would likely not have mattered to the authorities).Consequently, you should be able to find a Civil Death Certificate for the deceased General, and assuming he was Roman Catholic, you should be able to find the Acta de Defuncion registered by the Catholic Church in connection with the General’s funeral mass. All you need to do is identify the Municipio and Parish where the events took place.

Good luck.
