Yes, the church did use religious names to identify people, however the Spaniads were intricate record keepers and the church has the most records of marriages, baptismals, confirmations, deaths, speacial dispensations ( like cousin marring a cousin) not normal, but almost everything was recorded. Then there are civil records such as registering births, marriages, deaths and property transferes. All these are the researchers fertile field to gather datum. There are a lot of good sources of records in Mexico! My advice is to join a Geneology group to assist you in your research. The Mormon Family history centers are the best sources for research go to one and tell them were you want to research and have names dates and locations so you can search their CD database files for your line... good luck
