Schnittker and Barnes .descendants
I am desperately trying to find details of a Robert and Anna Schnittker who left Hamburg, date unknown but I believe it was between 1883 and 1904. I suspect that they are the parents of my grandfather HEINRICH, born on the 25/9/1904 who was later assumed the name of Cyril Douglas Barnes. We do not know why and can only assume the following.
1]That his parents died whilst he was a baby and he was placed in an orphanage.
2]That his parents were killed during the Herero uprising and he was placed in an orphanage.
3] That his parents were interred following the South African WW1 invasion and sent to Pretoria circa 1915. This apparently was what happened to a lot of German colonials who were rounded up and moved to SA.
I have an original birth certificate in his name which states that he was born a Barnesin Market Street, Pretoria but I do not believe that this is the total truth. The couple who are listed as his parents on the birth certificate are Christopher Wedderburn Stephen and Caroline Annie Barnes. The father's occupation is listed as a blacksmith. What I was able to find out was that the father [Christopher] was a member of the SA armed forces in Namibia and that he died in Windhoek in 1916 as a result of falling from a horse. He was a farrier/artificer. Apparently his wife Annie was in Windhoek at the time and maybe stayed on. I have tried everywhere to find additional information but am now at a dead end. Is there perhaps somebody out there who might have access to the following:
-Names of the German colonials who were murdered by the Herero. [There were a few South Africans as well and I believe 3 women]
-Knowledge of how to obtain the names of those colonials who were interred and sent to Pretoria.
And finally, any knowledge or snippets about a SCHNITTKER couple in Namibia.
Thank you very much.
