Re: Seeking info re VanSycklen-VanSalee families
I have reached out to a good friend and most excellent genealogist, Pamela Sears, of Ohio, a published genealogical author in the NYG&BS Record and a regular informed contributor to the conversations on the Dutch-Colonies List at Rootsweb [[email protected]], and she has offered a two part reply to your query re modern resources. She has kindly allowed me to copy over her replies to this message board:
Riker's NND, page 480, says he was from Leewarden, Friesland
According to Riker's NND, there was an article on this family that
appeared in the Record in Volume 125, pp 1-7. Also, The DeWees Family by
Mrs. Philip E. LaMunyan, Norristown, PA (1905).

But, PERSI doesn't name the author.
From the NYG&B website:
Dewees, Curtis and Jack C. Vaughn, "Gerrit Hendricks De Wees: 17th
Century Dutch Immigrant to New Amsterdam" 125:1-7; A/C by Otto Schutte,

Also see (in fact, a must see):
There is a lengthy presentation of the family authored by one Jack C. Vaughn of Oxford, OH who doesn't seem to have an email address, but looks to be authoritative and well sourced, and which apparently expands upon the NYG&B article cited above (and he was one of the authors).
That should get you started.
According to this (from the NYG&BS website):
Dewees, Curtis and Jack C. Vaughn, "Gerrit Hendricks De Wees: 17th Century Dutch Immigrant to New Amsterdam" 125:1-7; A/C by >Otto Schutte, 135:282-284.
There is indeed a correction to the article in the July 2004 issue of the Record, by Otto Schutte of The Netherlands, but it only addressed the parents and grandparents of Gerrit Hendricks De Wees, and does not
expand upon the immigrant (and no mention of Ferdinand Van Sickelen).
John, with luck and some elbow grease this modern research information will take you a long way towards obtaining your research goals.
