I decided to play with the limited data available.
Is YOUR Martin Thompson the one that can be found in Eagle Grove, Wright Co., IA in the 1900 US census?Listed as 61 years old (born Jul 1838), immigrated 1870, employed as a mason.(I like this one because I have history in that IA area myself -- therefore I'm playing with this one in particular of the number of Norway born Martin Thompsons found in US census indexes.)
Let's assume that a birth of July 1838 in Norway is within one or two years of the actual date and probably in July.Since someone thinks he came from the Gran area we'll look in the birth/baptisms for something that has any slight ring of familiarity with the "family tree book".
Now those names start ringing some bells for me -- how about you?So similar.... and easily confused by someone not really understanding Norwegian naming patterns and practices.
Nothing about that birth/baptismal record means that the parents had any long term family history with the Gjefsen farm and nothing in that record tells us their ages, when they married or what other children they might have had.
