Thank you so much for your detailed response. I will certainly follow up on all of your suggestions. I did try to access the SGGEE website, but it seems temporarily blocked.I see that the Family History library in Salt Lake has the two ewangelicki records for Warsaw that you mentioned, as well as the earlier records from Ilow. I read your posting on Wikipedia with great interest and am beginning to understand enough to attempt the search. My first record of the family in Warsaw came from an extensive search in German Lutheran records from Latvia on a website called Raduraksti. An odd confirmation came from the Family Search website. I know they are notoriously lax in what they accept, but it seemed significant that they had records of two Wortmanns in Warsaw born around the same time as Louise Carolina. One was a Jan Wilhelm Wortmann, born in 1833 - perhaps the same person as the Jan Bogumil Wilhelm Worttmann born in 1827 that you found. I did run across an odd phenomenon that you can perhaps explain. All of the dates that I found from Warsaw gave two alternatives, always four years apart. Jan Wortmann and Zuzanna Mueller married either in 1818 or 1822, Jan born either 1794 or 1798, Zuzanna born either 1798 or 1802. I did dig up one more odd fact. In the 1880 US census there was a Karl Wortman born in Poland in 1826. Perhaps with enough tenacity I will be able to track the family down one of these days. I thank you again profusely for your advice, which has given me fuel for much more research.
