I have a John Heron who came from a well-to-do family in Glasgow, Lanark Co. Scotland. He ran away from home when a young man and went to London where he joined the army and was sent to Toronto, Canada. There he met and married Mrs. Elizabeth Southerton, widow of Lieut. Southerton. She was born in England but, came to Canada while a child with her mother and step-father, Mr.Elliott, who kept a bookstore there. She had two children by her first husband - Joseph Southerton and Mary Ann Southerton, both born in Canada. These children, being young at the time of their mother's second marriage, were usually known by the name of Heron.
John was born abt. 1808.On a NY state census his birth place is listed as Ireland but, because of correspondence from relatives in Scotland, the family believes he came from there. John Heron spoke with a strong Scottish accent which might easily have been mistaken for an Irish brogue. Can anyone make a connection with this John Heron?
