Hi Liz
No, no relation.Just browsing.I know all records are different but I had thought perhaps the death record would have given his parents names.Perhaps you need to find him on other Census to see what he gives as his place of origin.I have often found that the younger a person is the more likely I am to believe their information.Perhaps soneone on the look-up forum could find him on the 1850 Census when he is just recently arrived.Have you tried the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild site where they have a hugh amount of ships lists transcribed (free site).Perhaps his wife's death would produce some info that could help. There is a very handy site www.raogk.com (stands for Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness). You need to volunteer to do one Random Act a month and in turn you can ask someone else to do one for you.If you check it out there may be someone one there - everyone states what they can look-up - who could provide you with help.
Anyway, good luck.I think you should start with the earliest Census you can to see if you can find the definite place of origin and ask your cousin why they think they came from Scotland? She may have something that would help and she just isn't aware of its importance.
Regards
Patricia
