Commentary.
The Key Feature of this table is to be found in columns 7 and 8.
Columns 7 and 8, for many of the Jacobites, give his home parish and County.
The Sources from which this table was derived were found at the National Archives, Kew, London:
1)CO 5 190, pp 358 thru 369
Board of Trade and Secretaries of State: America and West Indies, Original Correspondence CO 5/190
Commissions, instructions, warrants, licences, grants, letters. . Commissions, instructions, warrants, licences, grants, letters. Board of Trade and Secretaries of State: America and West Indies, Original Correspondence Entry Books of Letters, Instructions.1714 - 1716.
This source provided the listing of 636 Jacobite Rebels transported to the Americas as listed in this 636 row table.
When the numbers in column two of this table are sorted in numerical order, the names fall into groups by ship (column one) and on each ship in the order listed in this source.
This source has been copied and published elsewhere.
2)KB 8 66, part I, folios 17thru 102
Court of King's Bench: Crown Side: Baga de Secretis KB 8/66
Special oyer and terminer rolls and files, including informations and depositions Principal Defendants and Charges: John Sparling and many others, high treason, levying war against the king, Lancashire and Middlesex (1715 Jacobite rebellion) . special.1714 - 1716.
This source provides a listing of 1,286 Jacobite Rebels imprisoned in four towns; Lancaster, Wigan, Chester and Preston.
In this source, each prisoner's name is listed in two different places, and except for prisoners in Preston, in three different places.
The letter in column 10 indicates the town. The number in column 9 matches the number used in this source.
If a name among these 1,286 Jacobite Rebels in England was found to match exactly or approximately a name on the list of 636 Jacobite Rebels transported to the Americas (as listed in columns 3 and 4), then that name was placed in columns 5 and 6 in the table. So the names in columns 3 and 4, should match the names in columns 5 and 6.
Not all names from among the 1,286 are listed in the table.
Some names of transported Rebels were not found among the lists of Rebels in prison in Lancaster, Wigan, Chester and Preston.
Columns 7 and 8 contain the all important names of the parish and county from which the Rebel comes.
One other Source, also found at the National Archives, Kew, London, wasused to determine the destinations in the Americas of the ten ships which transported the Jacobite Rebels.
3)TS 20 47 3
Treasury Solicitor: Jacobite Rebellion (1745) Prosecution Papers TS 20/47/3
Copy of Treasury warrant to contractor . Copy of Treasury warrant to contractor Transportation. 1717.
This source lists all ten ships by name, and all ten destinations by name, filling out the almost complete similar list found in source (1).
At the archives, this small four page source is grouped with 1745 documents in section TS 20, and is not with 1715 documents in section KB 33 1 5.
- - - -The ship names and destinations are as follows:
AG ---"Africa Gally" ---Barbados
AN ---"Anne" ---Virginia
EA ---"Elizabeth & Anne" ---Virginia
FS ---"Friendship" ---Maryland
GS ---"Goodspeed" ---Virginia(actual landing place Maryland)
HH ---"Hockenhill" ---St Christophers
SC ---"Scipio" ---Antigua
SS ---"Susannah" ---South Carolina
TB ---"Two Brothers" ---Jamaica
WF ---"Wakefield" ---South Carolina
- - - -Repackaging the table, so that it can be sorted in many different ways.
This table is here published as a .txt file in keeping with the restrictions of the site. It is quite small.
This table was developed as a .doc file, which is about 20 times larger in size.
The .txt file can be used as is. The columns have been arranged to make them fairly easy to read.
The more versatile and clearer .doc file can be recovered from the .txt file as follows:
Capture the .txt file (select and copy). (capture it with no extra lines)
Paste this file into "WORD" software. Clean, no heading or extra rows.
Do a substitute operation. For every SPACE, SPACE, SPACE, SPACE, SPACE substutute a COMMA (,).
That is, replace every set of 5 spaces in a group by a single ,
(this substitution is to correct for the auto-editing of this website)
Then select the whole file and then hit 'Table' , insert, table.
The text file will transform into a table with rows and columns.
I am in no sense an expert on Scotland or its culture.
I am not familiar with Scottish parish or county names.
So my transcription, whilst unbiased, could easily contain silly errors.
For all that, this is my gift to the community of genealogists and a tribute to
a lot of brave men, including my wife's ancestor William McPherson (#242).
