Camerons / Campbells of Ullapool, Lochbroom, Ross and Cromarty
Researching the family of Mary (Molly) Gordon Cameron Campbell of Ullapool. My uncle recently ordered her birth certificate.Reads as follows:
"Name and Surname - Mary Gordon Cameron or Campbell
When and Where Born - 25 October 1917, Ullapool
Name Surname and Rank or Profession of Father; Name and Maiden Surname of Mother; Date and Place of Marriage -
William Manson, Cooper and Fish Curer
Widow of John Campbell
Crofter who died 7 February 1915
Registered in Lochbroom on 8 December 1917"
Very curious as to who this William Manson was and whatever happened to him? Obviously he and Molly's mother, Mary, never married, as she kept the Campbell surname until she passed away. Also curious how Mary's husband, John Campbell died?
I believe I am on the right track with Molly's mother's family, but haven't verified for certain. So far I have:
1.Mary Cameron (Campbell) (b. about 1888, Ullapool; d. 1989 Lochbroom)
2.Alexander Cameron (b. about 1851, Ullapool; d. ?); m. Catherine (possibly MacKenzie?) (b. about 1859, Ullapool; d. ?)
- Donald 1880
- Catherine 1881
- Mary 1888
- Helena 1892
- Grace 1894
- Jessie 1898
- Dolina 1900
Alexander Cameron's parents:
3.Mary Gordon (b. About 1817, Ullapool; d. ?); m. ?
(** So we see where Mary (Molly) Gordon Cameron Campbell got her middle name.)
(** Alexander was her only child, as far as I can find. She remains 'Mary Gordon' into her 60s according to the 1881 Scotland Census for Lochbroom.)
Mary Gordon's parents:
4.Donald Gordon? (b. ?; d. ?); m. Grace McGregor? (b. About 1791, Lochbroom; d. ?)
- Alexandra Gordon 1815
- Mary Gordon 1817
- Donald Gordon 1818
Now, of course, I'm looking to find out if I am correct. If you know anything about this family, it would be greatly appreciated.I particularly want to know more about the Camerons of this area.On the census records, it states that Mary Gordon was a servant. So I'm thinking, its entirely possible she was a servant, perhaps for the Cameron family?I can think of no other reason her surname would remain Gordon, while her son, Alexander's, was Cameron. This would be very interesting to find out.
