Gibb Families in Banffshire and Aberdeen in 1800's
I have been working on several Gibb families that were in Banffshire and then Aberdeen in 1800's. I have an Alexander Gibb born about 1793 who was married to Jane or Jean Lawrence on May 14, 1826. They lived at Portsoy which must be in Fordyce, Banffshire, is that correct? Alexander died Jan. 26, 1865, Jane died June 14, 1880, both at Portsoy. They had seven or eight children that I can identify:
Janet Gibb born March 25, 1827, died 1914, never married but did have children.
John Gibb born May 31, 1829, no further info.
George Gibb born Feb. 22, 1831, was alive on 1841 census, no further info.
Mary Gibb born 1834, at least one son born 1859.
Jean Gibb born 1839-1840 time frame, was living with her mother in 1861
Elspet Gibb born 1841, died 1912 at Burnside, Strichen, Aberdeen, never married, lived with her sister in law, widowed Isabella Gibb nee Noble, in 1911 at Strichen
Jane Gibb born 1842, I suspect she is same gal as Jean above because there is ever only one daughter Jane/Jean on the early census's; died Jan. 21, 1864 at Portsoy, age 21 years, of TB.
Alexander Gibb born 1848 at Fordyce, married Isabella Noble, died 1904 at Burnside, Strichen, Aberdeen- Alexander and Isabella had eleven children that I have been able to identify and it is this family line that I started with.
Back to Alexander Gibb born about 1793- there is a birth recorded for an Alexander on Sept. 30 1792 to George Gibb and Janet Young. When 1793 Alexander died in 1865 at Portsoy, his step son James Leslie said Alexander's parents were Janet Young and (supposed) Alexander Gibb. My guess is that James Leslie was not sure who Alexander's father was, and I am willing to bet it was George Gibb. 1793 Alexander Gibb's wife Jane or Jean Lawrence was James Leslie's mother.
A death record in Banffshire says Alexander Gibb age 70 buried on Aug. 25, 1826; there is nothing that identifies who this man was- he would have been born about 1756. Could he have been 1793 Alexander Gibb's father?
There is a marriage in Banffshire October 21, 1788 of a Janet Young to George Gibb the latter of Farnachly (?) I can't make out the place name. And then 3 births...
Alexander Gibb born Sept. 30 1792 to George Gibb and Janet Young.
George Gibb born July 13, 1802 to George Gibb and Janet Young.
John Gibb born Nov. 1803 to George Gibb and Janet Young.
One person posts a family tree for 1802 George Gibb who married Janet Dustan- this George died April 26, 1869 at Buckie, Banffshire, was a shoemaker, had a son George who was the informant for his father's death. Janet Dustan Gibb died 1883 at Rathven age 81 years. The poster records that parents for 1802 George were George Gibb born abt 1770, Janet Young born abt 1770, was that just a guess as to how old they were? They have a date of death for the older George as 15th Oct 1817 in Farnachty, Rathven...Is it possible that Janet was married to a George and then to an Alexander? I wonder what the source is for the 1817 death of George Gibb senior.
If anyone has imnformation about these families, please contact me directly or post here- I have made a 30 page file for these Gibb's starting with (Alexander) and Janet Young, and focussing on the children of Alexander Gibb 1848-1904 and his wife Isabella Noble 1854-1919.
