census questions. please help.
I am new to researching the Scotland records and am having some difficulties.
I was wondering if there are any free census records available online? I know I must have viewed the 1841 census, as I remember seeing it. However, this was not recently and I can't seem to re-find where that was.
Specifically, I am looking for the Atkinson family that was living in Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland starting in 1840s (maybe as early as 1820s). Any help with any of these people would be greatly appreciated.
James Atkinson b. abt 1821 England is in Hawick in the 1841 census. He married Elizabeth Bailey Benson in Oct 8142 (I have their marriage banns). I have seen birth registration (transcription only) for some of their children. I also have the 1861 census, which has a nice listing of children. Between the census and the birth records, I think I have a complete (or mostly complete list of their kids). I also have some marriage info for some of the kids too. I really wanted to look at the other census info (1841, 1851, 1871, and 1881). James d. Jan 1884. Also wondering if there is any way to discover where he's buried? He died in Hawick. I have a death record for him (if anyone is an expert in reading these, I could use some thoughts on his mother's maiden name...very difficult to read).
A list of their kids:
Rebecca (m. William Gladstone). I think she had a daughter out of wedlock prior to this marriage. Elizabeth Benson Atkinson b. 1869 Hawick to Rebecca Atkinson and no father listed.
MaryAnn m. Peter Henderson
Sarah m. John Sharpe
John m. Margaret Turnbull
Samuel Benson Atkinson (my line).
Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Reply here or email directly [email protected]
