Help Please! M ILAKOVIC Surname (Anna born1862 in Serbia)
Greetings from Texas, Danica,
I was gratified to recieve your posting ref. my grandmother Anna "Milakovic" Luigi. She was born in 1862.I had no idea how to spell the last name, since I found it on the death certicifate of one of her sons, along with the Serbian ethnicity.Thank you for the heads up on the spelling.Perhaps now I will hear from someone who's family name is spelled the same way.I finally located Anna's Death Certificate in Sacramento City, Sacramento County, California.Date of death - July 2, 1918. At least now I KNOW she existed.Good thing for me since I was named for her.
The family is said to have owned and operated a large circus which traveled throughout Europe, coming to America somewhere in the early part of the twentieth century. If I knew where to begin my search, perhaps a laarge group like that would not be as difficult to find. My father, EUGENE MEEK LUIGI, wrote a short autobiography before he died and this is all I have to guide me in my search.I do know they were once in Crucifixus Serbia because both my father and one of his brothers (WILLIAM MEEK LUIGI) were born there in 1894 and 1896.Another, ALEC MEEK LUIGI, was born in 1892 on the Island of Malta. I have no idea where the MEEK in the name came from but it was the middle name of most of the male members of the family
I am a retired homicide detective here in Houston, Texas but never have I come across such a mystery. If you can guide me to places I might search for birth or marriage records, I would be most grateful.
Thank you again for your kindness.Anne Rossi
