I cannot decipher Column 22 either. To me it looks like Traebourg.Perhaps the name of a then-known affliction that would keep Zuzanna from re-entering the US?I quickly looked through a medical dictionaryI have. There are a few "T" words that relate to eye conditions that serve as indicators for future mental retardation. If she could not be admitted, that explains why I have been unable to find any trace of Zuzanna in the 1910 Census and beyond. It may also mean that Josef, rather than staying in the US, may have decided to return to Slovakland. Possibly, the story of that part of the family is there.

You may very well be right on the "correct" surname. In the US, it has more or less settled to Gensey. But I have seen many variants in records, some of them breathtaking.

Zuzanna (maiden name Gres) came to the US in 1895.The name Gres is a common one in Lubisce. She apparently worked as a maid in Bethlehem (PA) and married Josef in South Bethlehem in August 1897. His name is given as Gontzi on the marriage license application. The couple shows up in the 1900 Census at 3928 N. Fairhill in Philadelphia.

Gence, Joe (32) and wife Susy (25)
John (26) and wife Mary (19)
Michael (brother) -26
Gres, Michael - brother-in-law (30)
Grosko, John - 32 (boarder)
Kontul, John - 23 (boarder)
Kudrick, Michael - 22 (boarder)

This is a not-too-spacious row house, so it must have been pretty crowded. The family apparently used it as a base until at least 1906. I don't think they were there after 1908.

John and Mary (as Gonze) had son John sometime in 1901.This child died in April 1903.There is a possibility of a daughter Mary born in 1903.The couple apparently had another son John in 1905, who died at the age of 4 months that year.I haven't been able to identify any other children they may have had.

Joe and Susy apparently had daughter Maria in 1903. She is not indexed in the Philadelphia births on familysearch.org.But I have other family births not indexed too.I believe that means that they have not beenindexed yet, not that they weren't born.

I want to go to the regional library and get a large printout of that manifest.Maybe column 22 will be more apparent if it is bigger. Also, I guess I'll bug my doctor friends as to what it may be
