Diocese of Maribor Archives
Many original birth, marriage and death registers for the Diocese of Maribor (including registers for the Dioceses of Celje and Murska Sobota), Slovenia have been digitized and are now on line and accessible for free at http://matriken.graz-seckau.at/http://matriken.graz-seckau.at/
It may be worthwhile trying the site on a two or more browsers to select the one that works best for you. If accessing the site outside of Slovenia, you may need to enable Slovenian/Slovene in your preferred browser; otherwise you may only get the German version of the site. Adding Slovenian/Slovene is not complicated but you may wish to download an alternative browser so that you do not complicate the use of your regular browser; changing the language may mean that other sites that have Slovenian/Slovene versions may open up in Slovenian/Slovene rather than English. My preferred browsers for the Maribor site are Opera and Mozilla Firefox.
Opera browser: Free downloadhttp://www.opera.com/http://www.opera.com/
Open browser and select Tools – Preferences – Language – click on down arrow and select Slovenski (sl) – OK. Close down Opera so the changes can take effect. Open Opera and type/add http://matriken.graz-seckau.at/http://matriken.graz-seckau.at/ to the address bar. This will lead to a message in Slovenian about terms of use ‘Pravila za uporabo’ which has an ‘Agree’ button (written in German ‘Ich stimme zu’ that you will need to click on to allow the site to open. Click on the Maribor button on the left of your screen to open up a list of parish records.
Mozilla Firefox: Free download http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
Open browser and select Firefox – Options – Languages – Choose your preferred language for displaying pages – Choose – Select a language to add – Slovenian [sl] – OK. Click on all Oks until you return to the original screen.
Type/add http://matriken.graz-seckau.at/http://matriken.graz-seckau.at/ to the address bar.
The search process is slow but has the potential to be very rewarding when you find an original record related to your family.
