J. F Carlsen/Carlson-- H L Hunley-Confederate Submarine

By J Christianson June 03, 2014 at 05:01:25

I recently visited the H L Hunley in Charleston South Carolina. This was the confederate submarine that tried to break the Union blockage of Charleston Harbor in l864 by sinking the USS Husontonic. Hunley disappeared after the encounted and the Hunley and crew remained at the bottom of Charleston Harbor for 150 yearsuntil found in 2001 with the crew found at their post in the submarine.Submarines would not appear inwar again until WW 1.

One of the crew members of the H L Hunley was a J F Carlsen or Carlson. They are spelling it the same way in different historic books. They dont know his exact spelling but they only know he was European in orgin. We all know Carlson could be Swedish and Carlsen could be Danish or Norwegian. He was20 -23 years old when the Hunley went down so he was born between 1841-1844. Has anyone researched this guy to know if he was Swedish or Norwegian? Here is a link to what they know about him which is not much.
