I am researching for a friend. Her maiden name was Sperisen. Her Grandfather Urs came to the US in 1870 with his wife Magdalena. They settled in Richmond, Virginia. Shortly after their arrival their daughter Mary was born in April of 1870. (Info from US 1870 Census.) Seven years later, they had a son, Henry in 1877. In the US, Urs was known as "Euris" or alternately, "Uris".I have not be able to find any documentation of their arrival on the ships lists of the time. My friend does not know where in Switzerland the grandparents were from. I would suspect from having done research on one of the (unrelated) branches of Sperisens, is that they were from the Niederwil/Soloturn area. However combing through all the microfilm for all the Sperisen named Urs is not something I can take time from my own family research to do. There are of course, not any birth registrations mandated by Virginia at that time. She has been unable either to find any baptism record for her Aunt Mary or her Father, Henry. She says that the parent's names are not on her father's marriage certificate.
Urs/Uris Sperisen, b. Oct 1818, Switzerland; died 19 Aug 1901, Richmond VA
Magedalena/Magdaline (birth name unk.), b. Feb 1834, Switzerland; d. 6 Dec 1925, Richmond VA
Married 1869 or before in Switzerland.
Between the two of us, we know, or are related to most of the Sperisen in the US. We know definitely that we are not related to each other. I have researched all Sperisen/Spereisen (and other varients)that I have found who arrived in the US during the 1800s, and have been in contact with others here in the US now. But can't get through the brick wall.
My purpose in posting here is the hope that some one who is researching the Sperisen name, has this branch in their family tree, and can help fill in the blanks for us. I have spent several years researching for her while researching my own Sperisen relatives. We are both getting up in years. She is in her mid 80s now, and I sure would like to find something for her.
Grateful for any help.
