Re: Reese family from Wales to Audenried & Yorktown PA to Hocking Valley, Ohio
I am seeing some familiar surnames in your message.
I had a letter to my parents from my Mom's cousin, a Dr. William REECE Lewis whose father grew up in Audenreid, or that area. He stated that his great grandfather was Reese LEWIS of Wales and his grandfather was John Reynolds LEWIS, who was born in 1860, in PA and then lived in Audenreid. His siblings were Benjamin LEWIS, Ida LEWIS, Miriam LEWIS, Annie LEWIS, and Elizabeth LEWIS. Dr. Lewis went on to say that Reese Lewis, b.1833 in either Tredegar or Dyffryn,Monmouthshire, Wales, came to the US with an uncle by the surname of REESE. He was looking to buy some mining property or something like that. It also said he was told Reese LEWIS'father had been a harpist and played for Queen Victoria, who even visited Reese's mother when she had twins.
Anyway, the LEWIS family has a tie to the DAVIS family and a PRICE family of that area of PA. The PRICE name caught my eye. I was just looking up all the REESE families who had males born in WALES but lived in Audenreid or Yorktown, PA. I found an Evan,b:<1835>, a mine boss; Thomas, b:<1840>- lived near Evan; John, b:<1835>, William, b:<1821> - blacksmith. These were taken from the 1880 US CENSUS. You said your REESE family came around 1883. I didn't find a Benjamin listed at that time -1880.
There was a Benjamin REESE in Hazelton, PA in 1880, b.<1851> Wales, Miner and married but no wife listed. He is living by himself.
My ancestors are also buried in Jeansville Cemetery.
I have a reference to a Mr. John PRICE, and sons Raymond and Teddy. They were relatives from Scranton who attended a reunion probably back in the 1930's or 1940's.
I am trying to find out my PRICE relations connected to my relatives from Audenreid.
The one thing I realized is that William's middle name is spelled REECE. Could that mean I should look for only that surname? I still have a lot to find out about. Hope we have some kind of connection here.
