County loose records look-up

I have seen a record of a marriage of Murphy Bruce and Mary EAnderson and would have been probably between 1836-8. I saw this in a book, I believe, by Mary Bondurant Warren. There was also a reference that Murphy E Bruce was a schoolteacher.The title was Misc. records for the county. Murphy and family with 1 yr-old child was living next to his mother, Sara Bruce. The problem is, Murphy was listed as Memphly in 1840 census. Thank you in advance for any help.
