MEMORIAL - Editor Weekly News
Dear Brother, by the request of Harmony Grove Baptist Church we send you a memorial and resolution adopted by the church of the death of Bro. J. H. ESTES.
At a regular conference on Saturday before the first Sabbath in June 1890 the church adopted the following preamble and resolutions:
Whereas, our beloved Bro. and deacon, JAS. H. ESTES, was born May 13th, 1848.He professed faith in Christ in 1873 and joined the Baptist Church at Harmony grove.He was ordains deacon in May 1885, in which he remained until his death.
Brother ESTES possessed a spirit that few men have; he was consistent in all his walks in life and an earnest worker in His Master's cause.He died of typhoid fever at his home on the 26th day of February 1890.In his last hours he said if it was the Lord's will he would love to get well and be with his family. The day before he died he wished Rev. J. W. MCGAHA to be sent for, which was done. When he went Bro. ESTES told him he had been studying about a duty he had neglected, and requested Bro. MCGAHA to spend the evening with him.He said he had failed to call in the Elders of the church to pray with and for him.He requested Bro. MCGAHA to read a chapter and pray for him.He did so and after prayer Bro. ESTES said he was better satisfied.Just before he died he called on his physician, Dr. J. M. WHITLEY to pray with him, which he did. Bro. ESTES prayed for his children, and prayed God for His mercy and goodness.At 12 o'clock he passed out of this world of suffering to his Father's House, to live and feast with the saints of God forever.
Whereas the church has lost one of her best members, the community a good citizen, his loving wife a devoted husband, his children an affectionate father.Be it therefore,
Resolved, that we extend to the bereaved wife and children our heartfelt sympathy and commend them to the heavenly Father who ruleth all things for God to them that love and serve Him, and that these resolutions be placed upon the church Records as a memorial of Bro. Estes, and that a copy be sent to the Weekly New an also to The Hamilton Times for publican.

HENDON MURDERED – Guin’s Marshal Shot Down in Cold Blood
At Guin on last Monday evening town marshal W. A. HENDON was shot and killed by JACK GUIN, a boy about 17 years old.
The facts in regard to the shooting as given the Times are about as follows;
On Sunday last the marshal attempted to arrest some f the boys for drunkenness and disorderly conduct and this caused GUIN to make some threats to the effect that the marshal could not arrest him, and that if he attempted to do so he would kill him.On Monday following GUIN went into the store of Mr. PRATT in which HENDON, who was a jeweler, kept his tools, and began cursing.HENDON told him to keep quiet that he was drunk and if he didn’t go away he would arrest him. GUIN called the marshal a liar and repeated his threat that he would not be arrested.The marshal then started toward GUIN who made a motion to draw his pistol when the marshal struck him with a stick. Quick as a flash GUIN drew his pistol and fired, the first shot failing to take effect.He fired again, and the bullet struck the marshal just under the left eye. The wounded man lingered until eight o’clock Monday night when he died.
GUIN was taken in custody by the parties present and placed under guard, but no warrant was sworn out against him and during the night he walked off from the guards and escaped.
HENDON leaves a wife and three children.
