Cherokee in Alabama in 1862
Would anyone know why there would still be some Cherokee in the Guntersville area in the 1860's? My grandfather's grandmother, Matilda Elizabeth Shore(s) was born in Alabama in 1860 or 1862. Either she or her mother were full bloods, depending on who in the family you ask. Elizabeth married John Isaac Watts. Elizabeth's daughter, Frances Melvina Watts Chappell was Grandpa's mother. She registered her oldest son, and possibly her oldest daughter at birth in Arkansas but not the rest of her children. Grandpa tried to register himself when he was an adult but his birth certificate was back home in NY. I have tried to find information on where to register Grandpa but can find no trace of either family. Elizabeth's mother was Mattie Schultz, possibly it's hard to read Grandma's tiny handwriting, and she was supposed to be a full blood. Any help pointing me in any possible directions to find some record of these people would be greatly appreciated.
