I am thinking, and almost positive, that the Jeff's wife that was mentioned, is Betharia's daughter, and widow of Thomas Jefferson Baker.
["""Give my love to Bethiar and family to Jeff’s wife"""]
Jeff would have been, Thomas Jefferson Baker, who is said by some to have not survived the war and was probably deceased by the time this letter was written in 1864.
John Warren Moore, author of this letter, was bondsman for Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Baker 11/2/1859 with his marriage to Rosanna Baker. John was also Rosanna's uncle, his wife Mahala and Betharia being sisters.
At this writing I surmise that Jeff Baker was a member of the 21st Regiment Alabama Infantry organized in Mobile County 1861, and Thomas probably died early in the war at the Battle of Shiloh, TN, April 6&7, 1862 when the 21st lost 200 men, about 1/3 of their total regiment, in that one battle. There was a Thomas J Baker in the 21st, whether it was this T J Baker is unproven.
Any information, thoughts, or corrections, about any of this or about the demise of Thomas J Baker and where buried will be most welcome.
Widow Rosanna Baker, with one fatherless child, married John Deakle soon after the war, August 1865.
