Amanda Ellen GIVENS Dennis Benson - Looking for Death Date/Place
I had been trying to find Amanda Ellen Givens for quite a while and found her tonight, but I still don't know when and where she died and I'd really like to know. From what I found, she died after 1930 and probably died in Arkansas (maybe Pulaski County).
I am looking for information as to Amanda's death date and place and whether she really was buried in Givens Cemetery.
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF I CAN FIND FREE EARLY DEATH CERTIFICATES FOR ARKANSAS AND IF SO, WHAT SITE??
Amanda's name at the time of her death would have been Amanda Benson as explained below. She may have gone by Ellen A. Benson versus Amanda Ellen Benson.
Amanda Ellen GIVENS was the daughter of George Givens (1800 South Carolina - 1877 Arkansas) and Mary E. or Martha Givens (maiden name unknown)(1821 South Carolina - bef 1870 Arkansas). Amanda's siblings were: Arminta J., Thomas J., Cyrus, Altessie Doria, George, Wesley E., William L., Mary F. and Amos J. Givens.
Amanda was born about September 1850 in Mississippi and died after 1930 - probably in Arkansas. She married Jonathan 'John' Dennis about 1872 probably in Arkansas. John died in either September of 1882 or 1883 in Arkansas and is supposed to have been buried in Givens Cemetery, Cow Lake Township, Jackson County, Arkansas. That cemetery was destroyed and no one seems to know what happened to the graves. Jonathan 'John' Dennis was born in 1849 in Kentucky and died in Sept 1883 in Arkansas (death year may have been 1882).
John and Amanda had at least four children - possibly an unknown 5th: Willie (1875-bef 1900), Minnie C. (1879-bef 1900), Unknown infant (1881-1881) and Robert Dorsey Dennis (1882-1918). I believe Willie and Minnie died prior to 1900 as they do not appear on the 1900 census with their mother & her 2nd husband plus Amanda indicates she has lost at least 4 children (4 living as of 1900 and those are son, Robert D., and 3 children w/ 2nd husband). Amanda actually indicates on the 1900 census that she has had 8 children of which only 3 are living. One of those 3 would be Robert Dorsey Dennis (living with her on 1900 census) - two others would be son Offie B. Benson (1888- ) and daughter Freddie Benson (1892-1986).
The third Benson child listed with Amanda and her second husband, Ephraim Benson, could have been his with his first wife, Elizabeth. This would explain her indicating that only 3 of her 8 children were still living as of 1900. That is pure speculation and the boy Marion E. Benson (Jul 1883- ) could have been Amanda's and Ephraim's. I cannot find Marion after the 1900 census and wonder if he didn't die young, too.
After Amanda's first husband, John Dennis' death in either September of 1883 (or 1882), Amanda remarries to Ephraim Benson born in December 1855 in Arkansas. Depending if Marion is their son, they marry either in late 1882 or early 1883. If Marion is NOT their son together AND if John Dennis died in Sept of 1883, then Amanda and Ephraim probably married about 1884 to 1887 as their son, Offie, is born in Sept 1888. Ephraim Benson died after the 1900 census but before the 1910 census where Amanda indicates she is widowed and Ephraim is not listed on the 1910 census.
In regards to Amanda and Ephraim's other two children, son Offie B. and daughter Freddie, I did find a couple of records on Offie and some on Freddie which is how I figured out that it was Amanda that I had found on the census records.
Freddie BENSON married a man named Frank Johnson and eventually they moved to California. On her death information it indicates that her father's surname was Benson and her mother's ... GIVENS! This verifies that the people I found on various census records was Amanda GIVENS and her 2nd husband and her/their children.
I had found a 1930 census for Freddie Johnson living in Hill, Pulaski Co., Arkansas and living with Freddie is an 80-year old woman by the name of Ellen A. Benson born in Mississippi. Amanda's birth date has been listed as various dates, but Sept 1850 comes up the most. This is most definitely Amanda on the census!!
So ... we know that Amanda Givens married after John's death and had more children and that she was living as of the 1930 census. I searched findagrave records for an Amanda Benson and an Ellen Benson and didn't find her so I don't know when she died or where she is buried (supposed to be buried in Givens Cemetery but no date of death is listed).
1870 Census - Cow Lake, Jackson Co., Arkansas (listed as Amanda E. Givens living with father & 2 siblings)
1880 census - Cow Lake, Jackson Co., Arkansas (listed as Ellen Dennis on census living with husband, John Dennis & children Willie and Minnie)
1900 census - Barren Fork, Izard Co., Arkansas (listed as Amanda E. Benson - living with husband Ephraim Benson and children Offie, Freddie, Marion E. Benson and Robert D. Dennis)
1910 census - Newport Ward 1, Jackson Co., Arkansas (listed as Ellen Benson [widowed] - living with children Robert D. Dennis and Offie and Freddie Benson)
1930 census - Hill, Pulaski Co., Arkansas (listed as Ellen A. Benson age 80 - living with married daughter, Freddie BENSON Johnson, son-in-law Frank Johnson, and grandson Norman T. Johnson)
If anyone knows when and where Amanda Ellen GIVENS Dennis Benson died, I would appreciate knowing.
Thank you - Toni
