I found a newspaper article at GeneaologyBank.com that is consistent, yet confusing:
Date: 1931-07-28;
Paper: Riverside Daily Press
Baptismal Certificate of Mrs. Gavin Shown - REDWOOD CITY, Jul 28 - Attorneys for the Flood family today began their battle to prove Mrs. Constance May Gavin is not a daughter of James L. Flood with the introduction of a baptismal certificated showing Mrs. Gavin was baptized as Constance Marguerite Stearn, and that her father was recorded as "Victor Stearn."Eudora Forde was named as the mother.Existence of the baptismal cerficate was not generally known. It set forth that Mrs. Gavin was baptized in St. Mary's Cathedral.. on May 19, 1893, just eight days after her birth.
In 1893, Eudora would have only been 12 years old, so I don't get it.But then I found this other article:
Date: 1931-02-02;
Paper: Evening Tribune
HEIRS UP IN AIR OVER FLOOD STORY - San Francisco, Feb 2 - The unexpected "confession" of Mrs. Eudora Forde Willette that the late multi-millionaire, James L. Flood, was not the father of Mrs. Constance May Gavin has thrown the 818,000,000 will contest into utter confusion...
And this one:
Date: 1931-07-29;
Paper: Evening Tribune
NOT FLOOD KIN, WORD IN FIGHT FOR MILLIONS- Redwood City, Jul 29 - ... Mrs. Eudora Forde Willette, of Oakland, mother of the Los Angeles woman who is suing for a share in the estate, resumed the witness stand today. She told a crowded, tense courtroom that Mrs. Gavin's father was the late James Cannon, a property man in a San Francisco theatre, and that Constance was 3 months old when she met Flood... She met him, she said, while she visited the theatre where her mother, Mrs. Alfredeta Forde, was playing.Mrs. Forde, 93, preceded to the stand. She told about her daughter's relations with Cannon and when asked whether Flood was father of Constance, she raised a thin, transparent hand. "Why, that is one of the foulest falsehoods ever uttered. I take my oath before God."...
Hope this helps.Annie
