Thanks for your reply!!
I'm George Petit's granddaughter. He raised me as best as he could there, when he could.I sure loved every minute in Layton's, with its dusty white sandy roads and all those pine needles on the road (I was hosing it down & raking constantly, for my picky grandmother). The way those pines SOUNDED!HowI miss that!
You & I may have "played" together.I was the park tomboy.I was born in '55 and lived in the park, too, off & on from about '59 thru '69!# D-62.
Harvey was my grandfather George Petit's little brother, he had a severe case of Down's.He lived with us but had his own room separate from the cabana. Amazing that he lived into his 40s, my grandmother couldn't cook. I think we ate at Morrison's a lot. I remember Rice Krispie Treats & Reese cups from the Restaurant.Which, by the way, seeing the sign from our boats all the time, "restaurant" was the first real bigword I could spell. And I was petrified of the floating dock til I was older.
You're right, "Ratty" as the park would be "now", it sure was a different way of life back then.A lot Simpler.Remember the freighters & trawlers nextdoor and the cajun music coming from them at night?
We had the "Too Much" right off the restaurant area & the big ol' white PT boat the "Helzapoppin" that was moored off the dock north of the boathouse & gasdock.
I would love to learn anything from your mother's memories.I don't know much about my grandfather George the "Man".
