Re: Billy's Island, Okefenokee Swamp
The book you refer to was written by Francis Harper, from Cornell University. He was part of a 30-year study of the Okefenokee Swamp and its culture. The story of how they played a part in helping to create the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge during FDR's administration is told in the epilogue of"Queen of the Okefenokee," by Lois Barefoot Mays, available from Okefenokee Press.Dr. Harper's wife had previously been the tutor to FDR's children at Hyde Park. She got the president's attention when she appealed for his help.
"Queen of the Okefenokee" has a few references to Billy's Island (e.g. during the typhoid outbreak). There are also references to Billy's Island in "Settlers of the Okefenokee," by Lois Barefoot Mays.
