Susan, It is unfortunate you received little info from the numident, however the Soc. Sec. website states that it is an abbreviated record. As far as the price, I agree it is completely outrageous. We have been hearing for years and years about how SS may run out of money.I guess they figure they'll make up the difference thru genealogists. Too bad you don't know where Alton Nowak died.It would have been cheaper to order an obit or a death certificate, but since you don't know where he died, you might only obtain one thru a lucky guess. You might try the Chicago Tribune obit volunteer at this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcook/lookups/lookupdeath.htmhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcook/lookups/lookupdeath.htm $2.50 per obit and no cost if not found.
*The numident record is a computer extract of information from the original application for a Social Security card. Many records of older individuals, primarily those born in 1910 or earlier, are abbreviated records that do not contain the names of the individual's parents and may not contain the place of birth.
