The following information is from "Inscriptions Of Shelby County, Illinois Cemeteries", Volume II.
The Mt Carmel Cemetery is located in Sec 32, Shelbyville Twp, four miles south of Shelbyville on the Clarksburg blacktop road.It is several acres in size, is fenced and cared for by the township.There were several unmarked graves.As of April 20, 1972 there were approximately 765 persons buried in this cemetery.The earliest known burial was made in 1844.
A church, called Mt Carmel, was erected adjacent to the cemetery in 1872 at a cost of $1200.It had a good life for many years, but gradually fell into disuse.It was torn down in the summer of 1971.
According to information in The Federal Tract Book, Entries for Land, Shelby Co, ILl., Peter Fleming purchased the SW 1/4 SE 1/4 of Sec. 32 Twp. 11 R 4 on 5 Sept, 1838.This cemetery is on a portion of that 40 acres.
