I know the spelling is off, but here is a possibility:
If you go to the Newberry Library website, there is a listing for a Eugene B. READ.It says he took part in an expedition to Minnesota and points west, after serving in the civil war, in Company M, 3rd Illinois Cavalry Volunteers.
To find the file number and description, go to the bottom of this page: http://www.newberry.org/nl/collections/L3cdesc.htmlhttp://www.newberry.org/nl/collections/L3cdesc.html Under "Collections" choose "Manuscripts and Archival Collections at the Newberry Library."Next choose "Civil War Manuscripts."Scroll down to "READ, Eugene G."
You can probably order the "Case MS 5073" file (or at least the portions of the file pertaining to Mr. READ) from the Newberry Library. You can email the library for info and prices.I believe their prices start at about $7, and probably go up from there. That $7 may be a search fee, and they probably also charge a copy fee per page. Their e-mail address is: firstname.lastname@example.org
