Elaine, Not my family, only sharing: Dunleith Twp. is in JoDaviess County, IL, not Springfield, IL. Did they actually have Springfield in the obit? No wonder you couldn't find them! 1870 Menominee, Jo Daviess County, Illinoispage 237A #79 #84 Mitten, Maryage 60keeping houseb. Ireland Kate30Ireland

If Mary Mitton lived to be nearly 90, she should be on the 1880 somewhere. I tried different spellings and soundexed them all, but couldn't find her. If her age on the 1870 [of 60 years] is correct, she would have died sometime in the year 1900. The obit states that she "died at her home on Gear St." There is a street called Gear St. in Galena, IL which is in JoDaviess County. Found an estate listing for a Catherine Mitten in JoDaviess County, Box 165. The index gives the years 1828-1915. She does not appear on the 1900 for Jo Daviess either, but the name could have been misread by the transcriber for the index.
1878 History of Dunleith Twp. From the "History of JoDaviess County, Illinois" by H.F. Kett and Co. Turner, Chas. Section 20 P.O. Dunleithfarm Couldn't find Charles and Elizabeth on the 1880 of JoDaviess County. There was a20 year old farmhand named Charles Turner, but he wasn't married. Since there is a farmer listed in the 1878 history, it would seem that he should be in the 1880, but I did check Dunleith Twp.'s 27 pages and the Turners weren't there. It is puzzling that they are mentioned in the obit and the 1878 history and not on any census I can find.
Do you have the Montana connections of John Mitton? I found he had gone with his family there [Flathead County] and found them on the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. John died in 1925 and is buried with his wife and several children in Conrad Cemetery. I can send the data if you don't have it. Perhaps you could get his death certificate for more information. One interesting thing is that on the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census, John gives his father's birthplace as France.
I live in Illinois and have been to Galena several times. I could possibly try to get Kate's probate for you if that would help. Let me know what else I can do to help. Regards, Barb
