Donald, Found a few things which I hope will help in your search: Civil War Pension Index[Ancestry.com] Matthews, Smith CO K 63rd Illinois Infantry filed for invalid's pension on 14 January 1887; the index card did not show which state pension was filed from. invalid application # 593758 certificate # 513388 I know that you said you had his discharge papers, but his pension file would show all the places he resided after leaving the service, in addition to other pertinent data; marriages, divorces, dependent children's births, etc. It can be ordered from either the National Archives or an independent researcher in D.C.
Have you seen these marriages? Smith Mathews to Mary Eliza Gordon6-2-1865Coles Co. IL Smith Mathews to Laura Chowning3-22-1878 The second one is of the most interest; in looking for information on Smith Matthews I found several posts from Barbara Iverson. I believe you communicated with her regarding Smith Matthews. In one of her posts she mentioned he was belived to have been born ca 1840 in Indiana:

Surely this is Smith Mathews who married Laura Chowning in Coles County in 1878? From my Civil War database subscription: Smith Matthewsresidence: Charleston, ILmustered in to CO K 63 IL INF on 12-1-1861mustered out: 4-9-1865 If you contact the Illinois State Archives, they will check the muster roll for this soldier and his age and birthplace should be on the roll. http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/datcivil.htmlhttp://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/datcivil.html Scroll down toward the bottom of the page and look under "photocopies" for information on obtaining information from the muster rolls.
