SPRINGFIELD - Howard C. Humphrey, 75, passed away on July 20, 2009, in Florida.
He was born November 7, 1933, in Taylorville, IL, the son of James W. and Helen Chestnut Humphrey. He married Lynda Young on June 24, 1956.
Howard C. Humphrey was elected Chairman of the Board of the Franklin Life Insurance Company on July 22, 1987. He served as Chief Executive Officer from 1986 to December 1995, and as President from 1986 through 1989 and from 1992 through 1994.
Howard joined the Franklin Life Insurance Company in 1959. He was appointed Assistant to the President in 1967, was elected a Vice President in 1968, was elevated to the post of Senior Vice President in 1971 and in 1974 was named Executive Vice President. Howard served as President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board as a member of the Franklin Board of Directors from 1972 through May 1996, and as Chairman of several affiliated companies.
He attended the University of Illinois, was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor's Degree from the College of Finance. He also holds a Life Office Management Association Fellowship and was awarded his Chartered Life Underwriters Degree in 1967 by the American College of Life Underwriters.
His civic and business interests have led to membership on various boards. He has served on the American College Board of Trustees, the American Council of Life Insurance, as Chairman of the Life Office Management Association, the Illinois Life Insurance Council, and the Illinois Chamber of Commerce. He also has served as the Sangamon County United Way Chairman and was on the board of the Springfield Urban League and Memorial Medical Center. He was a member of the Board of Bank One Springfield, the University of Illinois Foundation Board, and the U of I's Athletic Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee at the University of Illinois-Springfield and is Ambassador for the Springfield Project. He was awarded the U of I's Distinguished Service Award at the 2006 graduation ceremony. Since retiring, Howard was the author of three novels.
Howard and his wife, Lynda, are the parents of two daughters, Cathy Humphrey-Padget and Lee Humphrey-Dodd. Cathy and her husband, Bryan Padget, have two children, Brendan and Allyson Padget.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lee Humphrey-Dodd; a brother, James Humphrey; and his parents.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, July 24, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 25, 2009, at First Congregational Church with Reverend Brian E. Damrow presiding. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery
