LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, 6625 Sheridan Road, grew from Saint Ignatius College, which, founded by the Jesuit Fathers in 1870,andbecame the College of Arts and Sciences of Loyola University in 1909.Ir was moved to its present 23 acre shore campus in 1922.No mention of a cemetery can be found.
Not far is theROSEHILL CEMETERY (open 9-5 daily), Ravenswood Ave. at Rosehill Drive, the largest in Chicago, was developed privately after the city closed its cemetery. Beyond the castellated Gothic entrance are 331 park-like acrescontaining more than 110,000 graves including many of Chicago's greats of the past 2 centuries.
The Chicago City Cemetery, located at Clark Street and North Avenue, is now where the Chicago Historical Society is now located. The Cemetery operated from about 1857 to 1865. Then the city could not get clear title to the land it decided to vacate. The land eventually became part of Lincoln Park.
Be prepared for a long hunt. You should determine which cemeteries were in existence at the time of you ancestor'a death.Look in a city directory or phone book for that year. Narrow your search to your ancestor's religion, ethnicity, and residence. If you can not find them there move on to the other cemeteries. There are 42 designated Catholic Cemeteries in the City of Chicago alone. I hope this gives you a beginning as to how research cemeteries in the City of Chicago.
