As a proper Scot, two books you might also be interested in are Arthur Herman's How Scotland Invented the Modern World and my biography of Anna Ella Carroll, Lincoln's advisor and military secret agent. She was also a national leader in the Know Nothing movement in the 1850s. My first chapter goes into the history of Presbyterianism in Scotland and Northern Ireland to show why they were leaders in the KN movement (read: anti-Catholic Church). Carroll's ancestor Rev. Francis Makemie founded the Presbyterian Church in America in MD. The title is: Great Necessities: The Life, Times, and Writings of Anna Ella Carroll, 1815-1894, also from Xlibris (due to the fact that she competes with Grant for authorship of the Tenn. River campaign, I had to self publish).
