James Cox marriages in Lawrence County
My great-great grandfather was James Cox who was born c 1800 in NC and died in Crawford County, IL in 1858.He is buried in Port Jackson Cemetery.
His children in the 1850 census were Sara, Fairy, Elizabeth, Henry and Edmund/Edward.But there were also others.Louisa/Lytha and Mary were older daughters who were also born in NC.Martha Ellen Cox was my great-grandmother.She was born in July 1854 in Crawford County.
From probate and guardianship records, I have determined that Louisa married William Shoulders in 1849 in Crawford County. She was deceased when James' guardianship issues were being worked out her.Her daughter, Kissie/Keziah Shoulders, was mentioned as being under the guardianship of Abijah Highsmith. So was my great-grandmother, Martha Ellen. So was Edmund/Edward.
I believe that Mary Cox married Silas Higgins in 1851 - don't know where she was in the 1850 census and then married Reuben Dunlap in 1959.She is also mentioned in some of the legal records as Mary Dunlap.
Since Louisa named her daughter Kissie and since Edward's death certificate lists his mother as Kissie Mills - born in NC -- I think it reasonable to assume that she was James' wife and probably the mother of the older children.
I think that James married Ellen Umfleet in Lawrence County in 1853 and that she may have been Martha Ellen's mother but no real proof yet except the marriage license. The Umfleets came from NC.
James married Dianna Shipley in 1855. They were married at the time of his death and there were legal disputes between Diana and James' children.Dianna also married a Dunlap several years after James' death.
I'm really trying to figure out how James fits in with some of the other Coxes in Crawford County.
I'm also going to post to several board but wanted to send this to you personally.
Any ideas?Thanks for your help.
