Seeking women with Union ancestor for new group
The Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic is the oldest women's hereditary society in the U.S.--even older than the D.A.R--and was formed in 1881.Membership is open to women age 10 or older whose ancestor OR brother of ancestor fought solely and honorably for the Union (i.e. Yankees) in the Civil War.If other ancestors fought for the Confederacy, this does not prevent a lady from joining.
Applicants must pay a one-time $10 application fee plus annual dues of $19; provide a photocopy of her birth record; documentation of the Union soldier's service; and proof of relationship between the generations back to the Union soldier.Obituaries, wills, birth records, death records, marriage records, published family histories and county histories, census, pension records, etc. are acceptable as proof.The I.G.I., Family Treemaker, and other internet materials not of an original basis are not accepted due to errors in them.
