William Bellis, for the last eight years instructor in mathematics at James Millikin University, died at 6:45 o'clock Sunday morning at his home, 396 South McClellan Avenue. He was seventy-four years old last October. His death was caused by pneumonia and followed an illness of six days.
Mr. Bellis was born in Clarkston, Mich. Oct. 16, 1851. He and Miss Jessie Andrews of Orion, Mich. were married in 1872. Mr. Bellis had studied and taken graduate work at the University of Wisconsin. Harvard University, Cornell University and the University of Chicago. He had also taught for twenty-one years at the Central Normal School at Mt. Pleasant Michigan.During the eight years he had taught at the James Millikin University he won the respect and admiriation of faculty members and the student body in addition to ta great many friends outside of education circles. Although over seventy-four years old he had enjoyed excellent health until a week ago, and had conducted his classes regularly.
He was a member of Westminister church. He is survived by his wife and three children, James Bellis, who lives in Seattle,Wash., Arthur Bellis of Golden, Colo., and Miss Marie Bellis of Decatur. He also leaves a brother D. A. Bellis of Oregon, Ill. and a sister, Mrs. Martha Shaw of Lansing, Mich. The body was removed to the Dawson & Wikoff undertaking establishment and prepared for burial. *********************** All the details of his funeral can be found in another newspaper article in the Decatur Review, 16 Mar 1926.
