Looking for anyone with ties or information on the Richmond or McCullough families.
This is what I suspect or believe. The Richmond family came to Southern Illinois from South Carolina possibly via Tennessee/Kentucky.Records and research indicate that John Richmond was born in South Carolina about 1759.John had a son, Andrew, born sometime around 1780 in South Carolina. It is reported that Andrew’s descendents moved north into Tennessee through Kentucky to Southern Illinois.
This is what I have confirmed.Matthew Richmond is found purchasing land in Section 05 Township 06S Range 04W Meridian 3 of Perry County on 8/30/1833.There are two Richmonds in the 1850 Census data, John and Matthew.Matthew is listed as 49 (b. 1801) from South Carolina. His wife Jane, 41, also from South Carolina. They have the following children, Margaret, 18, ROBERT, 16, Jane E., 14, and Andrew Y., 4, all born in Illinois.
John, age 40, (b. 1810) in South Carolina. His wife Mary M., 30, daughter Elizabeth, 19, son Andrew, 17 all of South Carolina., while John, 9, Matthew, 7, Rachel, 5, and Sarah M., 10 months were born in Illinois.
Once again this is what I suspect.I have found two McCullough families in Indiana that fit my profile. One comes from South Carolina. There was a Samuel McCullough, born about 1749 in Scotland married to an Elizabeth McCrory, born about 1762 in Ireland.I believe their son, William born between 1780 and 1790 in South Carolina, is the lineage I need to follow but not 100% certain.William married Isabella (unkown last name) around 1803 in South Carolina and had the following children Jane, b. 1814 in SC, Mary Ann, b. 1826 in SC, Agnes, b. 1828 in SC, Leander, b. 1837 in Indiana, Elizabeth, b. 1838 possibly Indiana, and MARGARET M. b. about 1845 possibly in Indiana.
Here’s what I’ve confirmed.William C. McCullough purchased land in Section 33 Township 05S Range 02W Meridian 3 in Perry County, Illinois on 8/21/1855.Isabella died April 30, 1861 and is buried in Hopewell Cemetery near Pinkneyville. Her stone reads, “Wife of William.”Leander, who died in 1864, is also buried there. There is reportedly no William buried there.
TYING THE TWO FAMILIES TOGETHER
Robert J Richmond was born in Illinois in 1833 and I believe his parents were the Matthew and Jane Richmond from South Carolina found in Perry County in 1850Robert J. lived in Randolph County, Illinois and married in 1863 to Margaret MJ McCullough, who was born in Indiana about 1844/5 and is the one I suspect being a daughter of William and Isabella. They resided in Coulterville, Illinois for a time and are listed in the 1880 census with children Maggie, Nellie, Robert, Matthew, and Anna.(If one looks at the records it shows Robert’s birthplace as MS but I believe this is a census taker’s error as a good look at the actual page and I determined the row is “off” by one.Earlier and later census records have Robert correctly as born in Illinois.)Robert and his family eventually moved to the Centralia/Clinton County, Illinois area.Records show Robert and their children in the Centralia area, I even have Robert’s obituary from 1909 and have visited his gravesite, but there is absolutely nothing on Margaret.Robert is listed as widowed in the 1900 census so I’m guessing Margaret died before the move to Clinton County and I have not been able to locate a death record or gravesite as of yet.(Maybe that’s what caused them to move?).Robert J. died in 1909 in Clinton County, Illinois. Some of Robert and Margaret’s daughters stayed in the Centralia area and married while the sons moved to northern Illinois.
Anyone have any ties to either of these families?
